Estimate your overtime pay
This estimate covers overtime earnings only. It does not include regular wages, local taxes, deductions, credits, or exact withholding tables.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime hours and the overtime
multiplier. A common time-and-a-half calculation uses a multiplier of
1.5.
hourly rate × overtime hours × overtime multiplier = gross overtime pay.
Overtime paycheck example
At $25 per hour for 10 overtime hours paid at 1.5 times the regular rate,
gross overtime pay is $375:
$25 × 10 × 1.5 = $375 gross overtime pay
The calculator applies simplified federal income-tax, Social Security,
Medicare, and state income-tax estimates to the overtime amount to show
estimated take-home pay from overtime.
This calculator estimates overtime pay only
Regular wages are not added to the overtime result. Use the
Free Paycheck Calculator
when you want to combine regular hours and overtime hours in one basic
paycheck estimate.
What overtime multiplier should I use?
- 1.0: straight-time pay
- 1.5: time-and-a-half pay
- 2.0: double-time pay
Use the multiplier provided by your employer, union agreement, or
applicable pay rules. This calculator does not determine whether you are
legally entitled to overtime or double-time pay.
Gross overtime pay vs. take-home overtime pay
Gross overtime pay is the amount earned before taxes and deductions.
Take-home overtime pay is the amount left after estimated withholding and
other payroll deductions.
This simplified calculator does not include complete Form W-4 tables,
local taxes, benefits, retirement contributions, garnishments, tax
credits, or year-to-date wage limits.
Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
Overtime does not automatically have a separate final federal income-tax
rate. A larger paycheck may result in more tax being withheld, but your
final tax depends on total annual income, filing information, deductions,
credits, and the completed tax return.
What can change overtime earnings?
Overtime earnings can depend on your regular rate of pay, eligible
overtime hours, employer policies, work location, labor agreements, and
whether other compensation must be included in the regular rate.
