NEW JERSEY PAYCHECK GUIDE

How a New Jersey paycheck estimate works

New Jersey withholding is more complex than a single flat percentage. The state uses graduated rates and employee withholding elections. Payroll may also include state-administered worker contributions that are separate from New Jersey income-tax withholding. The Madison web calculator therefore labels its result as a simplified state estimate and directs users to official payroll information for exact treatment.

The calculator starts with gross pay. For hourly workers, gross pay is regular hours multiplied by the hourly rate plus overtime hours at a basic 1.5-times rate. For salary workers, annual salary is divided by the selected number of pay periods. It then estimates federal income tax, employee Social Security, employee Medicare, the supported New Jersey amount, and user-entered deductions.

New Jersey state income tax and withholding

The planning rate shown by this page is graduated simplified estimate. The calculator applies a simplified graduated New Jersey rate schedule to annualized wages and divides the estimate by pay frequency. It does not model all NJ-W4 allowances, exclusions, credits, or employee contribution programs. Actual withholding can differ because of state forms, exemptions, credits, payroll tables, taxable-wage definitions, employer configuration, and rounding.

Local income taxes in New Jersey

New Jersey imposes a graduated state Gross Income Tax. New Jersey municipalities do not generally impose a separate city wage income tax comparable to New York City or Philadelphia. Employees may also see state-administered payroll contributions for unemployment, disability, family leave, or workforce programs; this basic calculator does not separately model those contribution schedules.

Federal withholding is separate

Federal income-tax withholding is not replaced by the state calculation. It depends on annualized wages and the employee’s federal Form W-4 selections. This free tool supports a filing-status choice but does not reproduce every W-4 step, multiple-job adjustment, dependent credit, additional withholding amount, or year-to-date payroll condition.

Social Security and Medicare

Employee FICA normally includes Social Security and Medicare. These payroll taxes are separate from federal income tax and separate from New Jersey income tax. High earners, workers who reach an annual Social Security wage base, and employees subject to Additional Medicare Tax can see results that differ from this simplified one-paycheck estimate.

Important New Jersey paycheck considerations

  • Graduated New Jersey income-tax estimate
  • No separate municipal wage income tax included
  • State disability, family leave, and unemployment contributions are not fully modeled
  • NJ-W4 elections can change actual withholding
  • Federal income tax and FICA remain separate paycheck items

Overtime, bonuses, commissions, tips, shift differentials, holiday pay, and deductions can all change taxable wages. A pre-tax health premium may affect taxable wages differently from a Roth retirement contribution or a post-tax deduction. This basic web calculator accepts one combined deduction amount after estimating taxes; it does not classify each deduction for federal or state tax purposes.

How to use this calculator

1. Choose hourly or salary pay

Select the pay type that matches the paycheck you want to estimate. Enter the annual salary for salary pay, or enter the hourly rate and hours for hourly pay.

2. Match the pay frequency

Choose weekly, every two weeks, twice monthly, or monthly. Biweekly and semimonthly payrolls are not the same: biweekly usually produces 26 paychecks per year, while semimonthly usually produces 24.

3. Review the result as an estimate

Compare the estimated breakdown with a recent paystub. Differences may point to benefit deductions, local or state programs, W-4 elections, employer rounding, year-to-date limits, or payroll items not represented in this free calculator.
